“Between crystal and smoke” is inspired from Henri Atlan’s book Entre le cristal et la fumée: Essai sur l'organisation de vivant, 1979.
Brought to my attention by my biology teacher, this book deeply influenced me.
It was the first time I was reading someone mixing cybernetic, biology, thermodynamic, philosophy, psychoanalysis. Atlan as a thinker is also the result of the Talmudic tradition of analysis and interpretation, never satisfied by things as they seem to be. Few philosophers have such a rich background and such deep insights that give you the feeling that someone is connecting the dots.

To embody Atlan’s thesis in music (as an attempt) I was greatly helped by GRM plugins who were released at the beginning of the 2000’s. Spontaneous order may come from an auto-generated complexity coming from original noise.
Listening back to these pieces of music, I feel like I was trying to make minerals becoming alive.
As always with creation something may have go beyond my intentions, and maybe, somehow my musical self may have been somewhere between crystal and smoke.
